Suicide Is Ruling In Ferguson Death
Dennis Robert Ferguson, 25, of 1022 Beale, died at 7 p.m. Saturday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home while his family was celebrating his birthday.
Ferguson, who would have turned 26 on Monday, shot himself in the heart after being despondent over the loss of a girlfriend and a possible loss of his job, according to police.
Police said that Ferguson was laying in bed while his family had gathered to celebrate his birthday when he shot himself with a .357 magnum revolver. A .38 caliber slug was found in the mattress.
Deputy Coroner F. Dale Nelson ruled the death a suicide.
Ferguson was born Dec. 23, 1948, in South Bend and was an employee of the Copco Steel Corp.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson of South Bend; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elma Clements of Mishawaka; four brothers, Robert James Ferguson of Lorain, Ohio, and James Robert, John Robert and Richard Robert, all of South Bend; and a sister, Mrs. Janice Jackson of Lincoln, NE.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home.
Ferguson was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
