The death of Mrs. Mary F. Adams occurred in Perry, Friday, June 17th.
Miss Adams was the daughter of Chauncey Fox, Sr. who was a promnent lawyer, an influential member of the state senate, and had much to do with the railways and other enterprises which added greatly to the prosperity of this section of the state. Grove Hurlburt, who came to the town of Ellicottville in the year 1815 and in the following year built the first house and barn erected in this town, and in many ways helped the growth of Ellicottville in those early days, was the grandfather of Mrs. Adams. Andrew J. Adams, the husband of Mrs. Adams, was for many years a merchant in this village.
Mrs. Adams was one of a family of 5 children. Of this family 2 sisters are living, Mrs. Caroline Blackmon of Painesville, Ohio and Mrs. Arthur H. Howe of Buffalo. She also leaves one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Lillibridge of Perry.
Mrs. Adams was born in Ellicottville in the year 1836. By far the greater psrt of her life was spent in this village. Much of the latter part of her life was spent in Perry, with her daughter, and in the South, where she went to avoid the severity of our Northern winters.
Mrs. Adams united with the Presbyterian church in Ellicottville in the year 1851, and remained a member of this church until the year 1892, at which time she united with the Presbyterian church at Perry. She spent last winter in the South, most of the time at Tallapoosa, Ga. She died in Perry, at the home of her daughter, about two weeks after her return from the South.
Mrs. Adams was a valued member of the church and community. She easily made and retained friends. Her kindly, sympathetic manner secured for her a cordial welcome in whatever circle of society she moved. In affliction she was substained by the comfort in presence of her Heavenly Father. She passed from earth, cheered by the hope of a blessed immortality.
The funeral was attended from the Presbyterian church in this village, Sunday, June 19th, and the remains laid to rest in the Jefferson Street Cemetery.
