Mr. Oakes was born in Floyd County, GA on October 7, 1925, the son of the late Lewis Henry Oakes, Sr. and Susie Blalock Oakes. He served in the United States Army during World War II and retired from Flowers Baking Company. Mr. Oakes was a member of Riddles Bend Baptist Church in Rainbow City, AL where he loved his Joy Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents Mr. Oakes was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Lucille Canada Oakes.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Evelyn Oakes of Conyers, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Joe and Peggy Aycox of Monticello, GA; a son in the heart, Joe Rosipal of Conyers, GA; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a brother, Tommy Oakes of Cartersville, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Cordle officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion conducting military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel.
