Audrey Maxine Shaffer, 87, of Yuma County, passed away September 30, 2010.
She was the second child in a family of two sons and two daughters. She was born to Melvin E. and Ruth M. Mack on September 26, 1923, at their family homestead five miles west of Cope, Colo.
She attended elementary school at the Edville School for the first seven years by riding horse back or driving a horse and cart with her siblings. In 1927 they started driving a Model T Ford car to the Cope School, where Audrey finished the eighth grade and graduated from Cope High School in 1941.
On Feb. 4,1941, she was united in marriage to Bernard V. Shaffer and moved to the Shaffer Ranch. They farmed with horses and picked corn by hand initially, purchasing a tractor to farm with after the first year.
Next came along her first born a daughter, Yuvonne (Vonnie) Audrey, born Sept. 18,1941 at the Yuma County Hospital. In 1942 they moved to a farm four miles west of Cope, Colo., known as the "Arthur Place." They farmed there for one year. In 1943, she and her husband Bernard, purchased 200 acres from William A. Mack, milking cows by hand and selling cream for spending money. Her son Harvey Douglas was born Aug. 7, 1946 at the Flagler County Hospital.
In addition to farming from 1953 to 1959 they operated a small dairy. In 1959 the dairy was sold and they purchased their first Gleaner combine and truck. Audrey worked the farm while Bernard was away doing custom wheat harvest from Texas to Montana.
She and husband Bernard leased the Higgason farm and ranch and moved there in the fall of 1965. In 1972 they purchased the Higgason farm and ranch where they continued farming and ranching for 32 years. In 1975 she and her husband Bernard, started construction of their present home, working together, completing the home in 1981.
Audrey belonged to various clubs, was active in community affairs and was well known for her outstanding achievements at the Washington County Fair. She enjoyed many years of judging and helping with 4-H activities. She was a very good seamstress and could design her own patterns and sewed most of her children's clothing. Another enjoyment was her flowers, gardening, and canning the vegetables. She always enjoyed sharing her food and canned vegetables with family and friends.
She also enjoyed filling in as a cook and substitute teacher at the Arickaree School. In 1969 Audrey started a small Ceramics shop, taking classes and teaching ceramic classes for 16 years, adding porcelain doll making in 1982. She painted and taught ceramics to several people in the community and out lying areas. She helped the Cope community church by supplying nativity sets for vacation Bible school.
She and her husband enjoyed several trips abroad to Hawaii, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand, where they enjoyed their international square dancing club. Audrey always designed and sewed her own square dance dresses.
She enjoyed going as a family to Cope Community Church worshiping our savior, Jesus.
She was a devoted, honest and loyal wife and a very loving Mom. Her family was a very important part of her life seeing her children through many activities.
She is survived by her brother Robert Mack; daughter Vonnie and husband Russ Squires, son Harvey and wife Carolyn Shaffer; grandchildren Brian Squires, Brenda and husband Dale Merritt, Eric and wife D'Lynn Shaffer, Shoshawna and husband Dan Boyer; great-grandchildren, Justin and Jake Merritt, Balaun and Tyffani Squires, Garrett, Cole and Bryce Shaffer, Jade and Tristen Boyer; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Ruth Mack, sister Marjorie and brother-in-law Francis Koger, brother Richard and sister-in-law Faye Mack; and sister-in-law Phillis Mack.
Memorial services were held October 5, 2010 at the Cope Community Church.
Interment followed at the Cope Cemetery.
