Bernard V. Shafer, 83, of Cope, died Feb. 16, 2005, at Hospice of Metro Denver in Aurora. Funeral services were today at Cope Community Church, with Revs. Terry Covert and Eldred Sidebottom officiating. Burial followed at Cope Cemetery.

He was born April 26, 1921, in Cope to Roy and Ida (Conant) Shaffer.

He attended school at Happy Valley, a one-room schoolhouse. He moved to Missouri in 1935 and attended his freshman year of high school at Potterville, Mo. The following year he returned to Cope, graduating from Cope High School in 1939.

On Feb. 4, 1941, he married Audrey Mack in Benkelman, Neb.

The couple farmed and ranched.

He was a member of the International Square Dancing Club.

Mr. Shafer is survived by wife Audrey, Cope; daughter Vonnie; son Harvey; brothers Ramon and Robert Schaffer; sister Violet Engle; half-brothers Richard and Roy Schaffer Jr.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Merlin, Harold and Leo Shaffer.

Memorials may be made to Cope Community Church.
