Richard came to West Mountain,Texas with his father, John Knox Morgan and family and several other families in a wagon train in 1851. Traveling with them were the Todd, Elder, Phillips, White, Cheatam, King and Edwards families.
Averaging only about 8 to 10 miles per day, and using ferry boats to cross streams and rivers, sometimes taking several days, they traveled 800 miles in four months and arrived in West Mountain just before Christmas.
West Mountain became a thriving principality in those days. The Morgans were especially prolific. John Morgan had 13 children, and at least 72 grandchildren who lived in or near West Mountain.
Richard Morgan lived in West Mountain for nearly 50 years, and became a farmer, preacher, and singing school teacher. He also served in the Confederate Army for four years during the Civil War. During the battle of Chickamauga, a "minnie ball" passed completely through his right lung. He was given no chance to live, but he survived. He had thirteen children and became known as "The Father Of West Mountain Society."
