George Atchison was born in Drumcree, Drumsna, Leitrum Co., Ireland to William Robert Acheson (1760-1857) and Eleanor uni (1768-1839). He was the third of six known children born to this couple and the only one to emigrate to the United States. According to some resources, he left Ireland because he was wanted for poaching.

He married Margaret McClellan/d born in PA about 1798 in Pennsylvania, and had five known children: Eleanor, born about 1820 married Joseph Lovelace 4 Jan 1844, had seven children, and died 11 Mar 1855 in Washington Creek, KS of heart disease. William, born 15 May 1823, married Mary Gamble 12 June 1849, was the father of seven children, and died 24 Sept 1898 in Brandy, Sandy Twp., Clearfield Co., PA. Jane, born about 1830, married Robert McKeague and was the mother of seven children. She died 19 Mar 1883. Mary, born between 1825 and 1832, married an unknown spouse and died at an early age. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Clearfield Co., PA before Sept 1875. Nancy, born about, married and moved "out west" according to George Atchison's will.

George was known for his stance against slavery, going so far as to send his oldest daughter, Eleanor, and her family to Kansas to live so they could vote against slavery. He was a member of the Underground Railway and built a house specifically designed with rooms to harbor run away slaves. He was involved in debates with noteworthy opponents on this issue.

His obituary from the Indiana Democrat, 12 April 1877, states, "Mr. George Atchison, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the Cherrytree, died in his residence in that place a few days ago. It is said that he was aged over 80 years. The deceased was one of the original and most persistent abolitionists of Indiana county, and although honest in his opinions, probably was one of the bitterest partizans (sic)in the State."
