from the Rutland Daily Herald, Aug. 30, 1917:
The death of Ahira Heath of 61 Pine street, a resident of Rutland more than 35 years, a veteran of the Civil war and a prominent Methodist, occurred at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home after a month's acute illness which terminated a long period of steadily failing health due to advancing age.
Mr. Heath was born in Richford 83 years ago, the son of Elisha and Mary Noyes Heath. There he lived until after his marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Newton, who survives him. To them were born two sons, Alvin A. of 61 Pine street and Elmer W. of Bristol, Conn., and two daughters, Mary Lillian of 61 Pine street and Alice Elvira, now dead. Mr. Heath leaves one sister, Mrs. Malvina Pattee of Richford.
Mr. Heath enlisted October 16, 1863 in the 3d Vermont battery, light artillery, serving until June 15, 1865, when he was honorably discharged. The most important of the engagements of that struggle in which he participated was the Battle of the Wilderness.
After the war Mr. and Mrs. Heath settled in Stockbridge and lived there until they moved to Rutland in 1881. Mr. Heath was a member of Roberts post, G.A.R. before he became unable to get about the city and for many years he had an active part in the affairs of the Methodist church, having served on the official board until he was incapacitated for duty which required his going from home.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the house.
