Josiah Sturgis was a well known Boston shipmaster. He fell down and immediately expired in his own cabin, while he was giving directions to one of his men, immediately after boarding his cutter The Hamilton. His father was a well known hat manufacturer in Boston. Numerous death and funeral notices can be found throughout the NE states down to Washington DC. The funeral notice in Evening Post, NY, NY 7/2/1850 pg 1 states his burial location is Mount Auburn Cemetery.

He was married to Rebecca Cooper and they had the following children: Jonathan, Josiah J., Ann Eliza, Mary, Julia, Arabella, Deborah, Joseph and Henry A. C.
