Eugene "Gene" Powell, 47, of Bloomington, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at his residence. Born in Wayne County, Kentucky, he was the son of Willie and Nancy Phillips. He married Vivan Griffin, and she survives. He was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Moose Lodge in Bloomington.
Surviving with the wife are one son, Richard Powell of Bloomington; one daughter, Kelly Powell Purcell of Bloomington; adoptive mother, Alice Powell of Bloomington; two brothers, Homer Phillips of Bedford (Springville) and Ozie Phillips of Kentucky; eight sisters, Alta Wilson, Dora Moore and Gertie Sherrill, all of Bloomington, Lyda Griffin of Ellettsville; Lucy Bond of Nashville; Judy Collett of Seymour; Delores Abel and Diana Martin, both of Bedford; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his natural parents, adoptive father, Hobert Powell, brothers Vinton and Carlis Phillips.
Burial will be in Springville Methodist Cemetery in Springville.
