Frances Manwaring Caulkins says of Robert Hempstead (in her HISTORY OF NEW LONDON): "The name of Robert Hempstead has not been traced in New England previous to its appearance on our records. It is probable that when he came to Pequot with Winthrop in 1645, he had recently arrived in the country and was a young, unmarried man..." (This would also seem to agree with the conclusions of Donald Lines Jacobus in THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST).

"That Robert and wife Joane [who, by the way, was most likely NOT a Willie...see James Savage and D. L. Jacobus] are buried in the Ancient Burial Place there is little doubt.

"Pursuing our investigations we might make a long list of the fathers of the town whose graves have not been found, but whom we suppose to have been gathered into this congregation of the dead... -Where were interred, if not here, Robert Hempstead...?"

By Joshua Hempstead's reckoning (in his DIARY entry for Wednesday, 5 Feb 1746) the Town of New London was settled in 1647, and Robert Hempstead lived 7 years from that event. In his entry the Diarist says that New London was founded "99 years ago in January," speaking (it seems) of January, 1746, which would give the town a "birthday" of early 1647. If Robert lived 7 years from that time, his death would have taken place in 1654.

Excerpt from the will of Robert Hempstead of New London, Connecticut, dated June 1655:

"The ages of my 3 children.
Mary Hempsted was borne March 26th, 1647
Joshua Hempsted my sonne was borne June 16, 1649
Hannah Hempsted was borne April 11, 1652.
This I Robert Hempsted testifie under my hand."
