The son of George & Mary Louise (Bush) Ketterman, in 1860 he was a teacher living in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but by 1862 appears to have moved to Pittsburgh. He married Susan Ziegler allegedly ca. 1862 and fathered G. Conwell (b. 01/05/88, d. 06/02/92). He is shown living with his parents in every census in which he appears, and neither Susan nor any child is listed. Susan existed because she applied for a widow's pension, but their marriage may actually have occurred sometime during the 1880s.
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Pittsburgh March 26, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 1, 1862, as a private with Co. M, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (80th Pennsylvania), but deserted to date June 13, 1862.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three as "Robert Ketterman" and mustered into federal service in Lancaster July 15, 1863, as a private with Co. F, 27th Pennsylvania Infantry. On September 24, 1864, he transferred to Co. C, 73rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.
He died at the reported age of 48-1-7, which calculates to the birth date used above.
