One of the early settlers of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in the 1790's, when the area was still part of Northumberland County until 1813. Mathias first brought his family to Mifflin Township and later settled in the area known as Fishing Creek Township later named Mount Pleasant Township.

Mathias was a founder of what is now known as Dutch Hill Church and Cemetery which for many years was called Heller's Church and Cemetery.
