James Grey, was born in Scotland, in the year of our Lord 1823. In his early manhood, with the wife of his youth (who still survives him,) he came to this country in 1853 to win for his family a home in the then wilds of Wisconsin. They made their first home in Walworth, in the southern part of this state, but thirty-five years ago they came here, settled down upon unbroken soil, and by the blessing of the Almighty Father, who gave to them health and strength prospering the work of their hands, the wildness blossomed and beauty grew apace; plenty enriched their tables and they lacked no good thing.
Seven children blessed their union, four daughters and one son now living. The eldest son, William, was offered upon the altar of his adopted country and fills a soldier’s honored brave in old Virginia’s soil. Who dares to say such a life was lived in vain? In bonnie Scotland Mr. Gray and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church and upon settling in Walworth United with the Congregational church; they reared their family to honor and worship the Almighty Father and attend His house. For the long period of fifty-one years he and his death wife have toiled, sorrowed and rejoiced together. And now, he had departed this life to (we Hope) only enter upon one, fuller and everlasting, we leave him in the hands of our father, rejoicing that his memory is without stain of dishonor in the hearts of all here, that his unfailing kindness of heart, genial wood will and generous deeds shall keep his memory green, so shall his children’s children bless and revere the many excellences of a noble and useful life.
