He was known as an outstanding Maryland medical historicographer, physician, author and teacher.
The son of Rev. Dr. Levi O'Connor Cordell and Christine Turner Cordell, his early education began at Charlestown Academy and continued at the Episcopal High School of Alexandria, Virginia.
At the outbreak of Civil War he entered the Virginia Military Institute and then into the Confederate Army. He rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded in action at Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864. He was taken prisoner in 1865 and held at Fort Delaware until the war's end.
He graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1868. Following his graduation, Cordell held the position of "Clinical Clerk" in the University Hospital. He subsequently went on to serve as attending physician in the Baltimore General Dispensary. Then he served as Librarian at the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. He practiced medicine in Baltimore during the 1870's. He went on to help produce the Maryland Medical Journal. In his career he produced many works including The Historical Sketch of the University of Maryland, leading to the history, The University of Maryland and the Medical Annals of Maryland. The latter was a huge 889 page history of medicine in Maryland.
He joined the faculty of the University and held the position of Professor of the History of Medicine and became Librarian as well. He remained in service with them for the remainder of his days.
