Hiram was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Panora, Linn County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private on 23 Oct 1861 at the age of 24. He mustered in Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry on 5 Dec 1861. Hiram re-enlisted and re-mustered on 18 Dec 1863. Promoted to Farrier on 1 Jul 1864. Mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Hiram was a member of the soldiers' home from Hornick, Woodbury County, when he died at the soldiers' home at Marshalltown in 1917. Hiram died at the age of 80 years from uremia.
