Ruth Merrick was born in south central Dade County, MO, about three miles west of Pennsboro. She married Grover C. Bowman in 1916. Ruth and Grover moved to California in the early 1930s. In the late 1940s, Grover was in failing health, so Leroy and Mary Helen Miller drove to California, and bought them back to South Greenfield, where Ruth opened a small cafe in a building built of logs, on the west side of the square.

After Grover died in 1950, Ruth moved back to California, and married a man named Jack Knight. Ruth's name is on Grover's grave stone at the west end of Pennsboro Cemetery, but she is buried in California with her 2nd husband. The exact date of her death is unknown, but it was about 1960.
