Mary Eliza Zane (1844-1917) married in 1866, George R. R. Cockburn (1833-1912), of Toronto. He was headmaster of Upper Canada College, 1861-81, and a member of the Canadian Parliament, 1887-96. Their four children were Maj. Hampden Zane Churchill (1867-1913)(Toronto c1892) who was a barrister and received the Victoria Cross for gallantry while serving in the Royal Canadian Dragoons in the Boer War, South Africa, 1899-1902; George R. R., Jr. (1869-72); Emily St.Aubert (1871-1943); and Ralph Cockburn (1876-79). George Cockburn's (1833-1912) grandfather, Sir Alexander James Edmund Cockburn (1802-80), was a member of Parliament in England, attorney general, 1851-56, and Lord Chief Justice of England.

Mary Eliza Zane's mother was Emily Ann Augusta St.Aubert Churchill (1822-1914), who lived in Louisville, Ky. and married in 1842, Hampden Zane (1821-89), of Wheeling, [W.]Va. They had three children, Abigail Churchill (1843-60), Mary Eliza (1844-1917) and Thomas Hampden Zane (1846-62).
