Son of John Maxwell and Mahala Weddle Maxwell.

Enoch served, along with his father and 3 of his brothers, in the Union Army. He enlisted 1 August 1862 at Medora, Indiana in Company A, 50th Indiana Volunteer Infantry for a term of 3 years. He mustered in at Bowling Green, Kentucky on 10 August 1862. Fought in several battles, including the Battles of Saline River, the siege of Moline, Whistler Station, and Spoonville. He was badly injured on 15 September 1863 at Little Rock, Arkansas when soldiers loading potatoes on a boat accidentally let a sack of them fall from the river bank which landed on Enoch's back. He was subsequently in the Regiment Hospital through to September, and then later transferred to the hospital at Montgomery, Alabama. Returned to duty as a cook in October 1864. Mustered out 8 June 1865 at Montgomery Alabama as a Corporal.

Returned home to Indiana and became a dealer in hay as well as a grocery store proprietor. He was a Methodist and a Democrat. He was married four (separate) times, and between those wives had 16 children.
