Roland W. Hairgrove, 81, passed away Friday, October 15, 2010, in Sweetwater.

Graveside services will be 10 A.M. Tuesday, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, TX with both Military and Masonic graveside rites. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, at First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater with Rev. Roland Gregory, Rev. Steve Davis, and Vershel Smith officiating.

A family visitation will be held Monday evening October 18, at McCoy Funeral Home from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.

Roland was born February 11, 1929 at Y.L. Community near Muleshoe, TX. He married Joanne Akens August 16, 1952 in Abilene, TX. In 1953, after graduating from Texas Tech, they moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he worked as an engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

While working for Westinghouse they lived in Pittsburgh, PA, Newark, NJ, Buffalo NY, Sharon, PA, St. Louis, MO, Houston, TX, and Beaumont TX.

They moved to Friona, TX where Roland started farming. He moved from Friona to Hereford, TX one year later where he continued to farm.

After farming he entered the field of education and worked as a teacher and administrator in Hereford, Friona, and Sweetwater.

In 1982 they moved to Sweetwater where he owned a Montgomery Wards store until 1985.

While living in Sweetwater he became involved in oil and water color painting which he enjoyed very much.

Roland was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Open Door Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Downtown Men's Bible Class, Sweetwater Lions Club, and Sweetwater Masonic Lodge # 571. He was also a Shriner and a 32nd degree mason. He was a Cpl. in the U. S. Marine Corps serving three years for his country.

Roland was preceded in death by two brothers; Van Duane and Kenneth Hairgrove.

Survivors include his wife: Joanne of Sweetwater, a daughter: Cynthia Hairgrove of Austin, TX, two sons: Dale Lee Hairgrove of Seagoville, TX, and Dee Akens Hairgrove and wife Jill of Wichita, Kansas, a sister: Shirley Stenfath & husband Albert of Kress, TX, a brother: Michael Hairgrove of Ft. Worth, TX, three grandchildren: Jesse Hairgrove of Seagoville, Andrew Hairgrove and Megan Gilliland both of Wichita, Kansas.
