Mrs. R. M. (Anna) Cowen, a life-long resident of the Cooperstown community, died Thanksgiving Day in Fargo. She was 81.
Funeral services were held Monday in the United Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown with burial in the Cooperstown Cemetery.
Mrs. Cowen was born in Nelson County, North Dakota, November 19, 1883, at a time when a sod shanty was the family home on a pioneer homestead. She was the second of a family of nine children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Hammer.
The family later moved to St. Paul, where Mrs. Cowen attended public schools and later spent two years at a women's seminary at Red Wing, Minnesota. The family came to Cooperstown about 1899, and she was married here in 1902 to Bert C. Phipps. The couple resided at Mose in Griggs County where Mr. Phipps was a grain buyer, and later at McHenry, where he was cashier at the First National Bank at the time of his death in 1917.
She returned to Cooperstown and in 1926 was married to R. M. Cowen. The couple operated a resort at Red Willow Lake until his death in 1931.
Mrs. Cowen is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C. W. (Florence) Dingman of Menlo Park, California, and a son, Ross W. Phipps of Fargo. There are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters; Mrs. H. O. (Emma) Grangaard and Mrs. M. T. Houghton, both of St. Paul, and two brothers, Ralph A. Hammer of Cando and Henry G. Hammer of Cooperstown. Four sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
Mrs. Cowen had been ill in Griggs County Hospital here through the summer and at the time of her death had been a resident of a Fargo nursing home for about a month.
Mrs. Cowen had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years.
