Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Hammer, widow of the late H. P. Hammer, are being held today (Thursday) at the Cooperstown Lutheran church, following her death here early Monday morning from old age. She was seventy-seven years old at the time of her death.
Mrs. Hammer's death was not unexpected, her health having failed gradually during the last few years.
Married at Lakeville, Minn., March 25, 1881, Mr. and Mrs. Hammer the next year came to Dakota Territory and settled on a homestead in southern Nelson County near Lee post office, a settlement which has since ceased to exist. In 1899 they became residents of Cooperstown.
Mr. Hammer served as mayor of Cooperstown from 1921 to 1927. Ihn 1929 his picture was hung in the hall of fame of the Saddle and Sirloin Club at the N.D.A.C.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Hammer were natives of Norway. Mrs. Hammer being born in Christiana July 17, 1859. She came to the United States in 1874, living at Lakeville until her marriage.
The Hammers reared a family of nine children, all living except one, the late Mrs. O. J. Melgard of Grace City, N.D. Other children are Mrs. R. M. Cowen, Mrs. T. G. Thompson, William, Ralph and Henry Hammer, all of Cooperstown; Mrs. M. T. Houghton, Fergus Falls, Minn.; Mrs. E. O. Erickson, Tacoma, Wash.; and Mrs. H. O. Grangaard, Ryder, N.D. There are 16 grandchildren.
