Elizabeth Jane Kimes was born in Sangamon County, Illinois northeast of Springfield, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah Short Kimes. Lewis (Abt 1795-1936) was born in Baden, Verden, Niedersachsen, Germany, son of Mathias Kimes. Sarah Short (Abt. 1799-1837) was born in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee. Lewis and Sarah were married June 22, 1822 in Knoxville.

Elizabeth married William C. Coe on November 2, 1851 in Sangamon County at the residence of George Withey in Mechanicsburg, Illinois. Dr. Dresser officated at the ceremony. George Withey's wife, Martha, was Elizabeth's older sister.

After William's death, Elizabeth purchased a residence in Rochester, Illinois and lived there until her death at age 86 years, 1 month, 7 days.
