He was born in Goshen on September 5, 1922, to Jacob and Fannie (Schrock) Bontrager. He married Verna Chupp on February 3, 1949 in Nappanee. She survives.
A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Bontrager was a wood worker and carpenter. He was a member of the Mount Joy Mennonite Church, Goshen. He did his CPS in Hill City, South Dakota. He volunteered at MDS (Mennonite Disaster Service) and The Depot.
He is survived by his wife, Verna; a daughter, Karen (Bert) Stutzman of Goshen; three sons, Larry G. (Norma) Bontrager of Middlebury, Gene A. (Cinde) Bontrager of Goshen, and James W. (Kris) Bontrager of Winona Lake; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola (Crist) Gingerich of Shipshewana and Ida Helmuth of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by a son, Paul L. Bontrager; two sisters, Clara Gingerich and Laura Ropp; and five brothers, Simon, Ezra, Lloyd, Daniel and Elam Bontrager.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 24 and 25 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.
A 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 26, 2008, funeral service will be conducted at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, Goshen. Pastor Ben Shirk of Mount Joy Mennonite Church and cousin Marion Bontrager will officiate.
Burial will be in Clinton Union Cemetery, Goshen.
