Born to Sydney Ray and Mildred Iona Cowser Shirck, Sydney married Catherine E. Hughes on May 28, 1949, in Glasford. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Roger A. and Ronald; one daughter, Carol Tracy; and five grandchildren.

One sister preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a lifelong farmer in the Glasford area, retiring in 1986.
