NILES - Karl S Kistler, 88, a lifetime Niles resident, died at 9:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan.26, 2010, at St. Joseph Health Center.
Karl was born July 17, 1921, in Niles, a son of Samuel and Lula Mae Bunker Kistler.
A 1939 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippine Islands during World War II.
He enjoyed being know as a gentlemman farmer, going back to his earlier years when he farmed with his brother and father in Lordstown and North Jackson.
The owner and operator of the former family business, the Kistler Insurance Agency, for most of his adult life, he had adso been employed as a millwright.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing, golfing, flea markets, auctions, playing cards with his friends, and several memorabilia collector items, but most of all supported and followed his grandchildren in every activity.
a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served on the church council, and supported the Niles school system scholastically, academically and as a member of the Frontliners, joining during the Tony Mason coaching era.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Kistler, on June 9, 1996. and a brother, James.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Marie Turner, whom he married Jan. 7, 1944; his daughters, Maebeth Neher and her husband, Timothy, of Vermillion, Karlene Durisko and her husband David, of Annapolis, Md., and Rebecca M Mohn and her husband, Michael, of girard; six grandchildren, Jay, Darcy, Sarah, Samuel, Nathaniel and Andrew; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Camp officiating.
