Josiah Adolphus "Joseph" Boyles, was born on March 11, 1816 in Henry, Lincoln Co., North Carolina. He was the son of Rev. John Boyles II (1770-1843) and Margaret Whitaker (1765-1849), the youngest of their eleven known children. Josiah was a farmer and a Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) circuit preacher.
Josiah, my 2G-grandfather, was of Irish ancestry. His G-GF, William Boyles I (abt 1720-abt 1818?), along with brother Charles Boyles I (1722-1813), immigrated to America from County Donagal in Ireland about 1738. It is thought that the two brothers, William and Charles, paid for their passage across the Atlantic Ocean by working as deckhands on the ship, a common practice in those days.
Josiah's father, John II, was born about 1770 in Rowan Co., NC. Like Josiah, he was both a farmer and a traveling Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) preacher in the Lincoln County area. Josiah's mother, Margaret, was also born in Rowan Co., NC, about 1765. John and his wife, Margaret, were my 3G-GPs. They were buried in Lincoln County on their family farm.
Josiah's paternal grandfather and my maternal 4G-GF, was John Boyles I (1744-abt 1770). According to his grandson, Rev. Marcus Wrightman "M.C." Boyles (1842-1892), John I was born "a few miles south of Petersburg, Virginia near the James River" and died in Rowan Co., North Carolina. He had moved to Rowan Co. about 1759. John I's wife is currently unknown.
About 1841, Josiah married Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Yount (1819-1905), in Lincoln Co., NC. Josiah was 25, Annie 22. Born in Lincoln County, Annie was the daughter of Samuel Yount (1790-1860) and Katherine Lutz (1797-1869). Both of Annie's parents were also natives of Lincoln Co., NC, lived and died there. They are buried in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery located in Vale, Lincoln Co., NC.
Josiah and Annie were married for over 50 years and had four known children. It is probable that they also had several children who died at/near birth or who did not survive childhood. In order of their birth their known children were Rev. Marcus Wrightman "M. W." Boyles (1842-1892), Franklin J. Boyles (1844-1863), Sarah A. Boyles (1847-1864) and David Adolphus Boyles (1852-1938). Franklin's middle was probably Josiah and Sarah's middle name was probably Anna, both probably named after their parents.

W." served numerous M.E. churches in at least five different North Carolina circuits in the counties of Monroe, Forsythe, Harnett, Randolph, Robeson, Montgomery and Davidson. He was serving six churches when he died in 1892.
Josiah died in in 1894 in Burke Co., North Carolina at the age of 78. He is buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. During his lifetime the Salem Church was Methodist Episcopalian (M.E.). It is now (as of 1968) a part of the United Methodist denomination.
After Josiah's death his wife, Annie, lived with her son, Adolphus, in Morganton until her death in 1905 at the age of 86. She too, is buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, next to her husband, Josiah. Both appear to have replacement markers.
