Margaret Whitaker, my paternal 3G-ggrandmother, was born on Sept. 12, 1765 in Rowan Co. (est. 1753), British Province of North Carolina. At the time of her birth, North Carolina was still a British colony. NC did not declare it's independence from England until 1776.

Margaret was the daughter of William Whitaker II (1732-1799) and Abigail Baker (1740-1772). Both of Margaret's parents were born in British North Carolina and both died in Rowan Co. NC. They are buried in Rowan, however, their burial sites unknown.

On July 2, 1790 in Rowan Co., NC Margaret married John Boyles II (1770-1843). At the time of their marriage John was 20 years of age, Margaret 24. He was a farmer and Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) preacher.

John II was the son of John Boyles I (1744-abt 1770), who also was a farmer and M.E. preacher. Born near Petersburg, Virginia, John I had died just a few months after his son's birth. His wife (John II's mother) is currently unknown.

Margaret and John II were married for about 53 years and had eleven known children. They are listed in his memorial.

Margaret died (before 1844) in either Lincoln County (if before 1841) or Catawba County (if after 1841). The area that their farm was located in became part of Catawba County in 1842. When her husband, John II, wrote his will on Apr. 27, 1844, he mentioned all eleven of their children but he did not mention Margaret. Apparently, she was deceased. Margaret would have been buried on their family farm.

John II died sometime after Apr. 27, 1844, again the date of his will. He would have been about 74-75 years old when he wrote or had the document written. John, like his wife, Margaret, was buried on their family farm in Catawba Co., NC. Over 175 years have passed and their graves, as well as their little family graveyard, are no longer marked.
