Peter was the fourth child and third son of Christian and Elizabeth (Mayer) Eby. Shortly before his 14th birthday, Peter's father died. Peter's brother Christian, who was just 22 years old, assumed the role of head of the family.

When Peter reached the age of majority, he received at least £132 as his share of his father's estate and began acquiring property in Warwick Township. Tax records show that by 1770 he owned 290 acres.

Between 1762 and 1766, Peter married Veronica, daughter of Michael and Magdalena Donner and widow of Daniel Brubaker. She brought three children to the marriage: Anna, John and Daniel. Together, Peter and Veronica had four children: Peter Jr., Joseph, Abraham, and Elizabeth.

Veronica died about 1805. Peter then married Elizabeth (Huber) Miller. Elizabeth, born abt. Sept. 4, 1767, was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (Bucher) Huber. She was married to Michael Miller, a storekeeper in Manheim, about 1783, against her parents wishes. After 20 unhappy years and 10 children, Michael "ran away." In 1813, by her "next friend" Peter Eby, Elizabeth filed for divorce. It was granted by Lancaster County on Aug. 23, 1813, and one month later, Peter and Elizabeth entered into a prenuptial agreement. Presumably, they were married shortly thereafter.

Elizabeth received a life estate in 3 acres of Warwick Township land and $400. After she died, Peter's son, Joseph, finally settled the estate.

Twice in his life, Peter took other children under his roof. The first time was when he married the older widow Veronica who had three children, and the second time when he married the much younger Elizabeth (Huber) Miller.

Peter Eby was a wealthy and respected member of his community. His name appears on many legal documents as witness, arbiter, executor, administrator, and guardian. Nonetheless, he was frequently misidentified in early genealogical works.
