Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862. Promoted to Corporal in 1863, he served with his unit until January 1864. At that time he attended the Philadelphia Free Military School, an institution that was set up to train men to serve as officers in Union Army Colored Troop regiments. This led to his discharge from the Maine Volunteers, and a commission as a 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 24th United States Colored Troops on March 23, 1865. He saw the war through to it's conclusion, and was promoted to Captain and company commander on August 15, 1865. He served then until he was honorably mustered out on October 1, 1865.

On November 15, 1895 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #1171683, Certificate #1118866).

On On February 24, 1930 his wife, Edith G. Anderson, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1661851, no certificate).
