"In 1861, Dr. Robert Gourdin organized a company from the Lenud's Ferry section. This company went to White's Bridge in Georgetown and there volunteered for service in the Confederate Army. Dr. Gourdin was found physically unfit for military service--too old--and his company immediately broke up, the men uniting with other organizations. Many of those men joined Company A, of the Tenth Regiment, Captain Plowden C. J. Weston commanding. Among these were: ...J. L. Blakely...."

John Leonard Blakely was born in the mid 1820s. The application for his military headstone says he died May 28, 1893. His parents probably were John J. Blakely, b. about 1802, and Margaret, b. abt. 1798.
---
The variant spellings, "Blakely," "Blakley," and "Blakeley," persist within this family. Rarely, more divergent forms, e. g., "Blackley", are seen.
---
Although his wife's tombstone has "Blakley," and his children's records vary, the spelling "Blakeley" on John's tombstone is preserved here.
---
Brother: Samuel Sidney Blakely: c. March 1840 - aft. 1919; no memorial yet.
