William A. Gardner, 76, of 1201 Azel, Ave., died Monday at 1:50 p.m. in Mercy Hospital. Although he had been hospitalized for a week, his death was sudden and unexpected. Mr. Gardner was born in Hamilton on November 23, 1890, the son of John and Caroline Lagedrost Gardner. He became a dairy farmer in Hanover Township, then enlisted in the army on December 4, 1917, in Hamilton. He served as an officers' cook in France during World War I and was discharged on February 20, 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio. He married Helen Warwick in St. Mary Church on May 6th, 1942. During World War II he went to work at the Columbia Machine Tool Company where he remained for 12 years. He was a member of St. Mary Church, of the Holy Name Society of the church and of the Veterans of World War I, Barracks Number 339. He leaves his wife, Helen; one brother, George Gardner, Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews. One sister, Mrs. Hilda Tabler, preceded him in death. Funeral service will be held in the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Ave., Friday at 9 a.m., followed by Requiem High Mass in St. Mary Church at 9:30. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. Pallbearers are Robert Gardner, James Gardner, Charles Heistman, Calvin Carter, William Goertemiller and William Blume.
