On 24 Sep 1829, Samuel's father, Christopher, was disowned for joining the Hicksites. His mother, Jemima, was disowned 25 Nov 1830. Family lore states that Christopher assisted freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. It is possible as he lived in a community who supported this group.
