Taken from her obituary and family records and transcribed by Michael Bowen, MRB, #47351043. Fredrick Derheim was born October 7, 1867 in Neudorf, South Russia. He immigrated to North Dakota where he married Alvina Lehr on November 23, 1895. Alvina was born September 28, 1874 in Kassell, Russia. Their three oldest children were born in North Dakota: Lydia, John and Fredrick.

Hearing that great amounts of land were available in Canada, they took their family and belongings and came by train to the Irvine district in 1902. They bought land and set up their homestead ten miles south of Irvine. A large amount of work was done, building a log home and breaking land so that it could be seeded and harvested. Fredrick brought along from the USA. a large breed of heavy work horses, which were a great help working their land. They also raised and sold horses to other pioneers.

As the years went on, the family grew larger. Seven more children were born: Karl, Emma, Edward, Emil, Albert, Bertha, and Rueben. Fredrick and Alvina purchased more land at this time. In 1934, Fredrick and Alvina retired in Medicine Hat. Fredrick passed away May 8, 1936. Alvina remarried in later years to Christ Vossler, who also passed away later. Alvina lived to be 84 years old before she died on August 24, 1958.
