Pioneer Resident
Dies At Local
Hospital Today

Mrs. David Philips, 82, pioneer resident of Big Spring and mother of a widely known family, died at a local hospital early Wednesday following extended illness.
Rites will be held at the Eberley-Curry chapel with the Rev. H. C. Smith, First Methodist pastor, in charge but time of the funeral is pending arrival of a son from Tennessee.
Born Bettie Stroud in new Middleton, Tenn. on Jan. 23, 1862, she came to Texas in 1882, setting with her husband and infant son at Tyler. In April of 1898 the family moved to Big Spring, and this had been her home continuously since.
Mr. Philips was a life-long and faithful member of the Methodist church and was active in its affairs until failing health intervened several years ago. She was widely known and loved throughout the area.
Burial will be beside the grave of her husband, David Philips, who died April 22, 1920.
Survivors included four sons, Col. H. F. Philips, Dallas, Shine Philips, Big Spring, Dr. Dan D. Philips, Mt. Pleasant, Tenn., and Dr. Jesse Philips, Lubbock; one daughter, Mrs. B . D. Boswell, El Paso; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at the chapel until time for services. Pallbearers will be Dr. C. W. Deats, Dr. Woffard Hardy, Joe Flock, Cliff Talbot, Bob Piner, Grover Cunningham, W. E. Carnrike. Friends of the family will be considered honorary pallbearers.
