WEST POINT, March 4._Louis J. Clement, 82, one of Tippecanoe county's oldest and most prominent residents, died Saturday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Obed Irwin at Richmond after several weeks of serious illness. He had been in failing health for a year.
Born in Lafayette, December 12, 1852, he had spent his entire life in this county with the exception of five years spent in Missouri when he was a young man. He had voted in Wayne township for 60 years and was a staunch republican. From 1895 to 1899 he was township trustee and later was a member of the Wayne advisory board.
He had been president of the West Point Telephone company ever since its organization 25 years ago and was also president of the former West Point bank. He was interested in church work and civic affairs. His wife, Mrs. Maria Sherry Clement to whom he was married February 28, 1883, died eight years ago.
Two children survive, Wilbur Clement of West Point and Mrs. Irwin at whose home he died. He also leaves a brother, William of Memphis, Mo., and two grandchildren: Helen Irwin, Indiana university student; and Charles Clement of West Point. Funeral services will be held at the family home at Glen Hall Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., burial in Sherry cemetery.
