Affectionately known as "Jimmy." Son of James Estell Maden Jr and Lillian Fisher Benson.

He married the former Veronica "Ronnie" Hushebeck on 9 January 1952 in Wilmington, Delaware. Together, they had five daughters: Mary (born 3 Aug 1952), Joan Ann (born 19 Sept 1954), Susan Marie (born 24 Dec 1955), Nancy Louise (born 26 March 1957), and Barbara Jean (born 18 August 1961). He served in the US Army during the Korean War, and later, in the Delaware Army National Guard. After his active duty, he became the Fire Chief for the Getty Oil Refinery in Delaware City, Delaware, where he served until his retirement in 1998.
