Joseph L. "Joe" Harris, 70 died early Friday morning at his home near Screven after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Wayne County, he retired from the Florida East Coast Railroad in 1948 after 33 years of service. He was also a retired farmer and a member of the Screven Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday from the Screven Baptist Church with the Rev. J.W. Bland and the Rev. Cecil Thomas officiating.Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lorena Green Harris of Screven; two daughters, Mrs. Brownen M. Bennett of Jesup and Mrs. Willard Nordin of Miami, Florida; three sons, J. Linton Harris, West Hollywood, Florida, Julian F. Harris, Miami, Florida, and John H. Harris of Screven; three sisters, Mrs. Collis Shipes of Waycross, Mrs. Joe Wainright and Mrs. George McNeil of Jacksonville, Florida; fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were nephews, Ralph Harris, Jesse Harris, Howard Harris, Carlos ones, Ezra Carter and Jerone Harvey.
Honorary pallbearers were Loyal Kicklighter, Joe Brown Wilson, A.M. Wilson, Emory Franklin, Larry Brown, Dr. McKee Hargrett, H.L. Grace, Enoch Moody, Walter Wasdin, John H. Lewis, Felton Tyre, Eli Beaver, J.L. Belcher, W.A. Whitaker and David Miller.
Burial was in the Screven Cemetery under the direction of the NeSmith-Harrison Funeral Home.
