Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a lawyer in practice, when he entered the Union Army in 1861, as a Captain in the 12th New York Infantry. In 1862, he was promoted Colonel of the 120th New York Infantry, took part in all the battles of the Army of the Potomac and was brevetted Brigadier General of US volunteers in 1864 and Major General of US Volunteers in 1865. In April 1865, he was head of the Military Bureau and Assistant Provost Marshall, he paroled 28,000 Confederate Army soldiers, among them General Robert E. Lee after the surrender of the Confederate Army. After the war, he served as a US Marshal for the Southern District of New York and as a Surveyor for the Port of New York.
