Joseph came to America at about age 14. He was a farmer and rancher, but also hired out as a scout for the government. His first wife was a Piegan Indian woman Mary Many White Horses (1834-1865). With Mary, he had four children: Louis, Antone, Sophia, and Rosalee. In the 1870 U.S. Census, also resided Peter Cobell (born 1850). This researcher thinks that Peter was Joseph & Mary's first-born, but documents of proof have not been found. His second wife was Mary "Stak tsi nes skim (Black Bear Woman) " Owl Child, she died in 1904. Joseph's children with his second wife are: Angeline, Isabelle, Josephine, Julia, James, Joseph, Thomas, Bessie, John, George, and Willie, and Freddie.

Joseph Cobell died Intestate. His Probate reads that "His wife Josephine inherits 1/3 of his Estate." His surviving children inherited 2/3 of his Estate equally. Since the Court records are official, it is not likely that the wife "Josephine" was a court error. Perhaps Mary's middle or first name was Josephine.
