Died, at his home in this city, Sunday, April 20, at 5 p.m. Elijah H. Amos, aged 75 years, 10 months and 7 days.

Mr. Amos was born Ju** **, 1826, Highland County, Ohio, and came to Iowa in 1853 and commenced farming near Monroe. In 1863 he married Miss Nancy J. Jones, of Monroe, who with one grandson, survives. Three children were born to them, Don C., Eliza A., who died in infancy, and George L., whose death occurred April 6th, of last year. In 1871 he, with his family, removed to Knoxville and was for a short time engaged in the grocery trade. He soon disposed of this business and opened a hotel, known far and wide as the Amos House. In this he was eminently successful. His genial manner, courteous treatment and scrupulous honesty built up a most prosperous business. About ten or twelve years ago he disposed of his hotel property and since has not been actively engaged in business, except some partnerships which did not demand his personal supervision. For many years he has been president of the Knoxville National Bank, which position he held at the time of his death. He was one of the most popular business men of Knoxville, anxious for every improvement of the city and ready and willing to use his influence for every good work. He had many warm personal friends, and so far as known, never an enemy.

The funeral service was held at 1 o'clock on Tuesday, at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. J. C W. Coxe, and interment made in Graceland Cemetery. The Masonic order, of which he was an honored member, attended the funeral in a body and conducted the services at the cemetery. Among others present from abroad were Joseph Jones and wife, William Jones and wife, Samuel Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Tice, of Monroe, and, John Swift, of Leesburg, Ohio, all relatives of the deceased.
