Vernelle Belle Thomas, 81, of Wetmore, KS passed away Friday October 7, 2010 at Jackson County Medicalodges.
She was born February 18, 1929 in Sabetha, KS the daughter of John and Ethel (Wimpy) Lortscher.
She graduated from Sabetha High School in 1947 and later earned an associate's degree at School of Theology. She was a social worker for the State of California for many years. Vernelle and her husband moved to Wetmore, KS in 2004. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Hemet, CA where she became the Daughter of the King and a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton.
Vernelle married Kenneth E. Thomas in June 1947 in Sabetha, KS. He preceded her in death on January 27, 2008.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Thomas of Wetmore, KS; a son, Jerry Thomas of Whiting, KS; a sister, Lula Hoerman of Tipton, MO; a nephew (she helped raise) John Culpepper of Oregon; six grandchildren, Curtis K. Buford of Elkhart, IN, Kimberly Thomas Short of Keystone, IA, Christena Thomas Lunsford of El Paso, TX, Anchalee Horn of Layton, UT, Jennifer Thomas Zamora of Buena Park, CA and Laura Horn Valdez of Ogden, UT; thirteen great grandchildren; a god child, Aimee Hottel (also her granddaughter); two great great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bill Thomas of Holton, KS; two sister-in-laws, Donna Beal and Floyd Thomas both of Sabetha, KS and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2010 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton. Memorial services in California will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Hemet, CA. Inurnment will be in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd Columbarium. Memorials may be given to the American Legion Women's Auxiliary in Wetmore or Good Shepherd Fund for children's home c/o Mercer Funeral Home P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
