Alfonso J. Atencio, 92, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his home in Ignacio.

Mr. Atencio was born Oct. 7, 1910, in La Garita, the son of Patricio and Emilia (Marquez) Atencio. He married Maria G. Aguilar on Feb. 14, 1933, in La Garita. He was a lifelong rancher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He liked to watch boxing. He was an associate of the Good Shepard's and the Nuestro Padre Jesus groups.

He is preceded in death by his wife and a son, Orlando Atencio.

He is survived by his brother Toby Atencio of Colorado Springs; three sisters, Delia Aguilar of Center, Margie Sanchez of Center, and Ophelia Vigil of Milford, Utah; two daughters, Beatrice Pacheco of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Cora Velasquez of Farmington; five sons Victor Atencio of Ignacio, Fred Atencio of Ignacio, Luis Atencio of Fruita, Fermin Atencio of Salt Lake City, and Alex Atencio of Farmington; 32 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great grandchildren, and numerous other family members.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 14826 Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio. The Rev. Eddy Andary of St. Ignatius will officiate. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Ignatius. Burial will occur at Ignacio Catholic Cemetery in Ignacio. Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
