This was taken on March 25, 1985 when my cousin, Luteen Burks Carroll of Gainesville, Texas, and I visited the cemetery. It was my first visit!

According to Mrs. C. G. Ellis, Montgomery, Alabama, Old Union Church was established about 1815 by pioneers settling in Bullock Co. from the Carolinas and Virginia. When the church was first organized, it was called Union Meeting House. The old church (meaning the first one) was located on the same side of the road as the cemetery but in later years a new church was constructed across the road from the cemetery.

This is a view from Brinkley Burks' grave on left front, facing toward the old Union Church. Next to Brinkley is Temperence Evans Burks (unmarked) and their daughter, Jemima Burks Sims. I took this picture on Oct. 30, 2006. The church had recently been demolished. It was built ca 1835; Brinkley helped to build it and was a deacon until his death in 1888. He never missed a meeting as long as he lived.
