Syllrene Craig was born as the daughter of Mezeppa Lee Craig and his second wife Lela Unknown in June of 1918 in Oklahoma. Times were very hard. Mezeppa Craig's first wife had died in childbirth of his youngest of two sons in 1911. He had remarried and the couple was found on the 1920 Oklahoma census with all members of the family accounted for. However, Mezeppa went to work one morning and did not return home that night. Nothing else is known of him. Thus, life for all of the three children changed drastically. The two boys went to live with their Grandmother, Georgia Ann Wolf Craig Atteberry. Syllrene was found on the 1930 census living with her mother and step father, George J. Johnson, in Cedar Grove, Comanche, Oklahoma. So the three siblings became separated.

Syllrene married James Edward Vandiver and lived her adult life in Hobbs, New Mexico with her family of three children.

She is a descendant of the famous Wolf family of Norfork, Arkansas as her grandmother, Georgia Ann Wolf, was the grand daughter of George Washington and Malinda McFelch Wolf, and the great grand daughter of Major Jacob and Maldred Meredith Wolf. Her Wolf ancestors are found in the historic Wolf Cemetery in Baxter County, Ar.
