Elizabeth's father, Samuel, was given 4000 acres of land in Montgomery County, Tennessee by his father in law as a wedding gift. He owned a "chain of mercantile stores along the Cumberland & Ohio Rivers & a line of small steamboats, used to transport supplies to his stores.(History of Kentucky & Kentuckians by E. Polk Johnson, Vol. III]".
"On 7 Apr 1819, Samuel Vance III wrote his will, before leaving on a trip. The will left a life estate to his wife, Elizabeth, & large amounts of property to four of his children, Margaret Laughlin Vance, Morgan Brown Vance, William Little Brown Vance, & Elizabeth Brown Vance. His holdings included land in Montgomery Co. TN & Stewart Co. TN, shares in banks located in Logan, KY & Clarksville, TN, & his mercantile business...Samuel's will makes the following request, "that my name might not be obsolete among my relations, I give & bequeath to each of my brothers & sisters & my old Father, Fifty Dollars to be laid out in some durable, but fanciful ornamental article to be kept by them, so that when it comes within sight of their vision they may recollect that such a being as I once existed."
After Samuel's death, Elizabeth's mother remarried to William Thompson, & moved the family to Davidson County, Tennessee. (Vance Association Newsletter, Jan 1998, Vol XIV, No. 1, JUNE 2001)
