When she was quite young, her father died and her mother Isabella remarried John Summers, who legally adopted Jenette. Jenette married John Bushong, April 6 1784, in Lincoln County, Kentucky, where she listed her name as Jenette Summers. In Lincoln County, they raised tobacco and other crops. Later, Lincoln County was renamed Franklin County.

Sally Bushong (1793)
James Bushong (1794)

In the 1790's John, Jennet and family moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio., They are noted as one of Ohio's First Families. Ohio was still part of the Northwest Territory and not a state. They homesteaded a farm near Chillicothe of about two hundred and thirty acres. On their farm they raised one of the oldest and most valuable apple orchards in Ross County. The farm, after John's death, was said, to be worth $3500.
