Herman was the 13th and youngest child of swedish immigrants, born just west of Hebron Lutheran church near Burdick in a stone structure - more of a barn than a house. He was a painter but held many other jobs to provide for his family, including working for a Greeley Gas Co. as gas lines were placed across Kansas and Missouri. Early in his marriage, he and Fawn homesteaded in southern Colorado but returned to Kansas in a covered wagon due to Fawn's health issues. At various times, the family lived in Minnesota, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois and even Texas for a short time.
He was a loving and gentle father and grandfather. His grandchildren fondly remember him feeding squirrels from his hand and pitching ball to them.
