JOAN J. HOMAN, 77, of New Bremen, Ohio died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 5:45 A.M. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, Ohio. She was born July 28, 1939 in Chickasaw, Ohio, the daughter of the late Leo J. and Clara M. (Kaiser) Homan.

She is survived by her brothers: Don Homan of St. Marys and Leo (Diana) Homan, Jr. of Maria Stein; a sister, Velma Berning of McCartyville; in-laws: Alvin Brown of New Bremen and Lillian Homan of St. Marys; and 50 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Maurice (Joann) Homan, Arnold Homan, Harold (Rose Mary) Homan, Dorothy (Anthony) Brown, Ruth Brown, and a brother-in-law, Sylvester Berning.

Joan was a member of the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen and was a 1957 graduate of Marion Local High School. She graduated from the University of Dayton with her B.S. in Education, and accepted a position in Kettering teaching Health and P.E. at the Jr. High level for three years. She then accepted a graduate assistantship with Bowling Green State University where she taught for one year while completing her Master's Degree in Education. She taught at New Bremen Schools for a year before taking correspondence classes in accounting. She then took a position with the Internal Revenue Service in Lima, and later in Dayton. In 1969 she moved to California, where she was the Business Manager for the Ojai Valley School for many years until she retired and returned to Ohio. In her early years, she enjoyed playing golf and was an excellent pitcher, playing fast-pitch softball with the Celina Suns and the Chickasaw Chicks. After her retirement, she was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, played Bridge online, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen with the Rev. Robert Hadden officiating. Interment will follow in the Precious Blood Cemetery in Chickasaw.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church. Contributions in memory of Joan can be made to the Cancer Association of Auglaize County, 120 S. Front Street, St. Marys, Ohio 45885.
