Claude A. Umstead was born to Claude B. and Margaret E. Umstead. After attending school he served as a seaman in the US Navy during World War II. He married Marguerite Rae Ingraham who had been previously married to a man named Shea who had also served in the US Navy and with whom she had two sons, Patrick and David. Claude became step father to her two sons, and he and Marguerite together had another son, William, and a daughter Evelyn (nicknamed "Bunny"). Claude was a roofer by trade and died in a tragic roofing accident at the age of 32.
